Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Missouri- Columbia has a postdoctoral position available immediately for one year, with possible extension to a longer period based on performance. Application for the position is invited until the position is filled.
Waste plastics present a major challenge to the society because of their enormous impact to the environment, including ocean aquatic systems. A promising circular economy approach is to utilize Post-Consumer Recyclates (PCR) to make high- performance asphalt pavement, while simultaneously reduce the amount of PCR released into the environment. A field demonstration has recently been deployed in Columbia, Missouri, where 6 miles of high traffic road was paved with both PCR plastic and ground tire rubber modified asphalt. The postdoctoral researcher will study the fundamental science involved in the interactions of PCR with various components in the plastics-modified asphalt pavement, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary group of faculty members in the department. The candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in civil and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, material science or related fields. Experience in multiscale modeling, soft materials and plastics characterization, and/or life cycle assessment is a plus. Inquiries could be sent to Professors Bill Buttlar (
